Informació rápida, però amb reflexió

Durant el meu master – i a partir d’ara, durant la meva tesi – he tingut la sort de tenir dos tutors que es complementen molt bé. Ella era una persona rápida eficient, d’aquelles que sempre mantenen la flama encesa, que desborden energia, que acaben els projectes. Ella era una persona que funcionava molt bé en el dia a dia. Ell, en canvi, era lent, sempre es queixava, mai sabia què fèiem, es sentia una mica apartat, però de tant en quant feia comentaris que cauen com una llosa, potents, tan potents que d’un cop el teu treball pren un nou camí molt més fàcil, molt més il·lusionant, molt més adequat.
Avui hem viscut una tragèdia, una serie de bombes han sembrat de dolor Londres. Quan he sabut la notícia, a través del bloc den David, he corregut a encendre la televisió, he posat la BBC. Al cap d’una estona he canviat a la CNN, a la CNN+, TVE… Al principi la informació ha estat útil, llocs dels atemptats, estat de les comunicacions dins la ciutat, recomanacions de les autoritats, etc. Un cop donada aquesta informació s’ha creat un buit, no hi havia res a dir. Però els periodistes, per raons de mercat, volien informació fresca de darrer minut, insistien molt en saber, per exemple, el nombre de morts, com si fos vital saber-ho en aquell instant, quan, en realitat, és una informació completament secundaria.
Era massa tard per donar informacions de darrer minut, ja feia massa estona que havien succeït les explosions i era massa d’hora per escoltar una anàlisi pertinent.
Llavors me n’he anat cap a l’ordinador, he tornat al bloc de David i he vist que estava començant a donar les primeres anàlisi útils i interessants. David ens estava aportant tota la informació recollida durant mesos d’estudi i l’estava aplicant al cas d’aquests atemptats.
Per altra banda, he continuat la recerca d’informació per altres blocs, tenia ganes de saber com es movia la blogosfera. He trobat el bloc de Nacho Escolar, que estava donant informació al minut: a les 12:37 tal cadena a dit que tal persona ha fet això, a les 12:43, tal periodista ha informat que ha vist algú que deia que… Nacho estava fent una gran feinada que, malauradament, no aportava gaire. Només eren dades.
L’objectiu d’aquest post no és altre que donar les gràcies a David per la seva tasca. Ell, tot sol, ha fet el paper dels meus dos tutors del master, per un cantó ens ha estat donant informació rellevant al minut, però, per altra, ha estat capaç de transmetre pinzellades del seu coneixement que ens han permès avançar en la comprensió del fenomen.

Volem protocols oberts: abandonem Skype

La veu sobre IP (VoIP) comença a ser una eina essencial, permet estalviar molts diners, sobretot a aquella gent que realitza moltes telefonades internacionals. Fins ara Skype ha liderat la revolució, però aquest programa està condemnat a morir ja que, a part de no ser lliure, utilitza un protocol tancat. Com deiem fa uns mesos, això el matarà perquè, o bé el mercat se’l quedarà un protocol lliure, o, tal com està passant amb la missatgeria instantània (IM), serà Microsoft qui introduirà el seu sistema que, automàticament, serà utilitzat per tota la gent que utilitza Windows XP sense remordiments de consciència.
Com que nosaltres tenim remordiments en utilitzar Windows, malgrat ens posem guants de LaTeX i mascareta, hem de lluitar per imposar un protocol estàndard i obert com SIP que ens permetrà triar l’aplicació que voldrem utilitzar. La bona notícia és que ja hi ha clients que utilitzen SIP. N’hi ha de lliures com Phonegaim i n’hi ha que no ho són com el Gizmo Project (que fa molt bona pinta, llegiu la notícia a Slashdot).
És importatíssim que SIP s’imposi, la veu sobre IP hauria de ser un ecosistema com el del correu electrònic, hem fracassat amb la IM, no fracassem amb la veu sobre IP.
No hi haurà patents!

La Free Software Foundation Europe informa que hem guanyat, no hi haurà patents e programari a Europa!

After years of struggle, the European Parliament finally rejected the
software patent directive with 648 of 680 votes: A strong signal
against patents on software logic, a sign of lost faith in the
European Union and a clear request for the European Patent Office
(EPO) to change its policy: the EPO must stop issuing software patents
today."This outcome does not affect patents on high-tech inventions in any
way," explains Stefano Maffulli, Italian representative of FSFE:
"High-tech innovation has always been patentable, and even if the
directive had been passed with all proposed amendmends, it would have
remained patentable. It is important to point this out because the
proponents of software logic patents have tried to confuse people
about high-tech inventions being subject of this directive."FSFE's president, Georg Greve adds: "The parliament understood this
when it amended the directive in the first reading to keep high-tech
innovation inside and software outside the patent system.""Unfortunately, the council of the European Union ignored this
decision of the Parliament and removed those amendments. Many MEPs
were appalled at this obvious corruption of democratic process that
day and seem to have lost faith in seeing their amendments treated
with more respect this time.""Rejection of the directive became the very last option to send a
clear and strong signal against software patents in Europe," Greve
continues. "The Free Software Foundation Europe commends the European
Parliament on this decision: in the interest of harmonisation we would
have preferred a directive along the lines of the first reading, but
we understand that rejection became the last realistic option to avoid
doing irreparable harm to European economy."Jonas Öberg, vice-president of FSFE: "This reaffirms the 1973 European
Patent Convention (EPC), which excludes software from patentability.
The European Patent Office (EPO) has largely ignored this central
convention and granted approximately 30.000 software patents in the
past years: this must stop today! The EPO should not be allowed to
further ignore European policies!"Georg Greve explains the proposal of FSFE: "Much trouble was caused by
the inability of the European Union to hold the European Patent Office
responsible for acting against agreed-upon policies: unlike other
parts of a democratic executive, the EPO is not liable for the
decision it takes. We propose to establish an EPO supervision
instrument that holds the EPO management liable for its decisions and
