En Benjamin Mako Hill ha fet un molt bon article en el que argumente l’avantatge d’un punt de vista basat en principis (FSF) sobre un punt de vista, teòricament, pragmàtic (OSI):

After all, a principled position in favor of software freedom is a statement of how things should be, not a description of how they are. OSI will argue that open source leads to inherently better software. This statement, of course, is one that can be empirically tested and, in fact, there seems to be plenty of evidence that it is often wrong. On the other hand, the FSF’s position that software should be free is ethical in nature. One can disagree with it, just like one can disagree with any other ethical position, but it can not be proved either right or wrong — only convincing or unconvincing, logical or illogical in the context a certain set of other values that others might or might not share.

  M’he llegit l’article original en el que deia que els partidaris d’Open Source havien de convertir-se a free software i utilitza un argument que em sembla erroni. Diu:

  If, as open source advocates would argue, the reason we’re here is to build software more efficiently or at greater profit, we must also advocate for proprietary development methodologies in areas where evidence seems to show that they are more effective. Where are these advocates? Where are the open source advocates applauding LinuxCare for saving themselves by abandoning FLOSS.

  Però una persona pot prendre la decisió que és més eficient el open source i pensar també que la coherència és una tàctica necessària per arribar al seu objectiu estratègic. Pensar que quan una persona pensa una cosa a nivell general ho ha d’aplicar a cada situació concreta és d’allò més naïf.

  Jo crec que li aniria molt bé comparar la comunitat open source amb els Maqueros. Se li desmuntarien unes quantes opinions, em temo.
