Carbó transportat en tren
Com més penso en el nostre futur energètic, més se’m posen de punta els pèls. Sempre he intentat defugir el catastrofisme, però em sembla evident que el petroli és finit i que la transició a energies renovables és molt difícil, ja que res en aquest món ens proporciona una densitat d’energia tan alta com el petroli, en forma líquida, ens proporciona energia solar acumulada durant períodes de temps d’escala geològica. No sé com podem batre això amb les energies renovables o el carbó, el candidat més probable. La conseqüència és que haurem de renunciar a moltes coses i, si no planifiquem, la transició serà dolorosa. No obstant, el necessari debat energètic encara és residual i, encara pitjor, la nostra capacitat de debatre fredament i raonada temes complexos és quasi nul·la, com bé demostren el nivell dels debats públics sobre el clima o l’economia.
The November issue of Gregor.us Monthly, Coal World, has now been published and it carries an unhappy message. I am forecasting that the world will not successfully transition from oil to a broad basket of renewable energy and power sources over the next twenty years. Instead, I strongly favor an outcome in which oil, the construction fuel for the global buildout of new power generation, becomes so expensive that the world becomes energy poor, and turns instead back to coal. In case you hadn’t noticed, the process of energy impoverishment has already begun.
Those who would propose a successful energy transition over the next 20 years have failed, on a number of fronts, to produce a holistic model that pays respect to both the history of previous energy transtions, and to all (not just some) of the hurdles that lay before us. For example, one group of transitionists will lay out the technical feasibility of running the world exclusively on clean power. But they ignore the construction phase, or the energy required to fund it. Other transitionists will appear to address the construction phase, but instead will elide over crucial engineering details by invoking historical examples of national will–like the space program, or the retooling of Detroit during WW II. Most neglected however is the history of previous energy transitions. And here we find the largest hurdle of all. For, in humanity’s last two transitions, from wood to coal and then coal to oil, the trajectory each time was to a higher power density energy source. Energy transition is disruptive enough, but much less so when you are gaining energy density. And how do you suppose transition will be this time, going in the opposite direction, to lower density sources?
Encara queda petroli per a tota la nostra vida i més. De totes maneres amb el carbó es podríen fer altres coses que no sigui cremar-lo.
Sí, això no ho dubto. La qüestió no és si hi haurà petroli, és a quin preu el tindrem. Pic del petroli != fi del petroli. Pic del petroli vol dir que la producció en barrils/dia disminuirà i que, per tant, baixarà l’oferta i que, per tant, augmentarà el preu, fet que obligarà a replantejar certs habituds actuals. Sembla que la AIEA diu que hem assolit una “meseta”.
De totes maneres, tu tens més elements que jo, almenys en la part geològica. Però el preu del petroli no només depèn de qüestions geològiques, depèn de qüestions geopolítiques, econòmiques i d’enginyeria.
Encara que pugui haver-hi pics no crec que arribi a ser molt car en les próximes dècades.

El preu del petroli depen de tants factors… un d’ells és la qualitat o tipus de petroli. Ara es poden explotar nous jaciments de petroli de menys qualitat perquè el preu més elevat ho fa rendible. Personalment espero un preu del petroli amb tendència general a l’alça, doncs tan sols quan ens toquen la butzaca cerquem alternatives. De fet, fins a la Crisi del Petroli dels anys 70, això de fer motors eficients no estava massa de moda.
