No fa massa vaig fer grans alabances a l’escriptori Gnome però sense justificar-me. Ja fa uns dies que vull escriure un text que argumenti la meva admiració per aquest projecte. Tot documentant-me per aquest escrit he trobat un article que conté, ni més ni menys, el que jo volia dir. Fins i tot, l’evolució de l’autor pels escriptoris de GNU/Linux és idèntica a la meva, amb la sola diferència que jo m’hi vaig introduir un any més tard i, per tant, vaig començar directament amb KDE 1.0. L’article es titula Why GNOME’s Got it Right i el signa l’editor en cap d’Open for Business.

Com que vull que us el llegiu us poso només alguns estractes per tal que aneu fent boca:

Last week, some developers disagreeing with the direction of the GNOME Project decided to create what appears to be the beginning of a fork of the project – GoneME. Like many from KDE Project and elsewhere in the community, GoneME’s major complaints boil down to what has proven to be GNOME’s most controversial move: simplifying the user interface. While naysayers, including the GoneME developers, seem to feel that the simplification of the interface, undertaken with the encouragement of such GNOME leaders as Havoc Pennington of Red Hat, is actually just “dumbing down” the interface, I think these critics are actually missing the point completely.

GNOME understands the average user. Whereas KDE continues to become more bloated with, by one count, over 200 configuration panels inside KControl, GNOME has aimed for simplicity with reduced configuration complexity made possible through the highlighting of the options business users want and need. While it does cause a loss of flexibility to some extent, this is easily made up for by lowering support costs and making GNOME’s tools less intimidating. This does not indicate that GNOME is not useful for power users. In fact, it has lots of tools and features that will make most power users feel right at home. Furthermore, many developers are creating tools to work with GConf settings to accomplish even more configurability (the advantage of leaving these tools out of the main distribution means this flexibility can exist without unnecessarily creating a larger area where bugs must be fixed between releases). What GNOME has essentially done is declare it is leaving the era of complex computing and joining the world of simpler, easier systems that Mac users have been enjoying for decades.

De fet, Gnome no és només un gran escriptori sinó que és molt innovador. Mireu sinó el dashboard que aviat tindrem tots al nostre escriptori. De fet, a poc a poc, Gnome està fabricant l’arma que necessitem, de la qual en parlo sovint. Evolution + Gaim + Dashboard + … pot augmentar exponencialment la nostra capacitat de formar xarxes amb altres persones. Productivitat al servei de l’individu.

Malauradament Gnome no és tot el sistema operatiu. Seria molt interessant veure com aquests esforços per fer un sistema més usable s’extenen a la seva totalitat. En aquest article d’OSnews hi ha idees interessants al respecte. Per exemple, sempre he cregut que les eines tipus apt són molt bones, però no perfectes. Crec que ens agraden tant perquè estan a anys llum dels desastrosos instal·ladors de programes per Windows. Però de fet, les dependències són un merder (encara que es resolguin automàticament) i haver de passar-se un dia configurant un bon arxiu de fonts és pitjor. L’ideal seria anar a la web del programa en concret, baixar-se un sol arxiu i arrossegar-lo sobre una finestra d’un programa gestor de programari. Tal com fem per instal·lar els temes del Gnome.
