Don’t be evil

From: support |a can| rsync |punt| net To: pere |a can| quintanasegui |punt| com Date: May 22, 2006 7:36 PM Subject: rsync.net : new features, more space, and the NSA (please read) Hi, Please read this entire email, as it contains details of new features and policies that you should know about. Quota Command ------------- First, we have added a 'quota' command that you can run over ssh to see your current disk usage. Simply run: ssh 1005@usw-s001.rsync.net quota Indexed Pricing --------------- In a few days, you will note that your filesystem will increase by 10%. We have decided to periodically increase the disk space in your account, and also to lower our prices for additional storage (and for new customers) by that same percentage once every six months. You don't need to do anything, and there is no increase in cost. You will simply get more space every six months, for free ... forever. You can read details of this policy here: http://www.rsync.net/products/indexed.html NSA / Warrant Response ---------------------- We are not happy with the current climate in the US that has service providers compromising the security and privacy of their customers, and the possibility that a law enforcement agency can serve a "National Security Letter" (a secret warrant) to compell our cooperation without the knowledge of our customers. First, we are taking a strong stand against these practices in our philosophy: http://www.rsync.net/philosophy.html But more specifically, we are giving our customers a tool that will allow them to assess for themselves the relations of rsync.net to government agencies: http://www.rsync.net/resources/notices/canary.txt The bottom line is, we do not deal with anyone unless they serve us with an order from a US court having jurisdiction. Further, our customers will be made aware of all such orders and warrants. Finally, the warrant canary will alert you to a "National Security Letter" (a secret warrant). I believe we are the first ISP to adopt this strategy to deal with secret warrants and "National Security Letters". Future Geographic Expansion and Features ---------------------------------------- We are opening new sites in Switzerland, Japan and the UAE (Dubai), to supplant our two US locations, San Diego and Denver. Customers will be able to mix and match their primary and secondary locations and we will offer support for both the technical aspects of geographical redundancy, and the political aspects of national redundancy. This will allow customers around the world to create security based on geographical _and_ national/political redundancy for their data. Also, in addition to supporting rsync, Unison, the SSH suite, WebDAV and ftp, we are now adding support for subversion access. Please Help ----------- There are a few things you can do to help us. First, please recommend us to your employer, your clients, and your peers. Second, please add http://www.rsync.net to your del.icio.us bookmarks. You wouldn't believe what a response we get from this ... Third, if you have a blog or similar forum for posting items like this, please do make an entry for rsync.net and your experiences here. Finally, please digg this article that one of our customers was kind enough to submit: http://digg.com/technology/ISP_Takes_a_Stand_Against_NSA_Spying_and_Secret_Warrants We hope that you find these new features and policies helpful. We truly appreciate your business and hope to serve you for years to come. --john
